MG Patty D. Delivers Vegetable Seedlings to CFHL
Vegetable Seedling distribution is bringing real life gardening experiences to the virtual lesson world for Daly City 4
th- 6th grade classes. Vegetable Seedlings were provided to students and families during their school meal distribution for Woodrow Wilson Elementary students/families, JFK Elementary School students/families, and TR Pollicitas Middle School’s students and their families.
The vegetable starts included seasonally appropriate plants like Parsley, Lettuce, and other plants recommended by UC Master Gardener Volunteers. A passionate group of 20 University California Cooperative Extension San Mateo and San Francisco County Master Gardeners assisted in growing over 200 vegetable starts.
These vegetable starts are enriching the learning experience of 4th -6th grade students who are also participating in Mr. Will Easlea’s Nutrition to Grow On lessons. These lessons are held live on Zoom and students are led through a lesson on Nearpod, an online learning program with engagement activities built in. The curriculum is a garden-based nutrition education where students are learning about the benefits of following MyPlate, fruits and veggies, and how to take care of a plant! By mixing virtual interactive lessons and providing instruction for students to be hands-on with their plants, we are making the best of a challenging and complex situation, and having fun doing it!
