Soil and Sustainable Practices
Description: Healthy soil is alive with a diverse community of organisms that work together to decompose organic matter, recycle nutrients, improve soil structure, and create pore space so water can infiltrate and be stored in the soil. All of these processes are essential for plant growth and development. At this talk you will learn how to build healthy soil, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) basics, and best practices for staying healthy in the garden!
UC Master Gardener Presenters
- Barbara Cohrssen: Barbara joined the UC Master Gardener program in 2007 while still employed editing books on occupational health, safety, and toxicology. She has interests in native plants, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), staying healthy while working in the garden and keeping her lemon and avocado trees fruitful. She also leads the monthly Master Gardener info table at the Divisadero Farmers' Market every 3rd Sunday, where you can come by for gardening tips and often free plants and seeds.
- Kimberly Swan: Kimberly spent decades experimenting in her small fog-challenged San Francisco backyard, joining UC Master Gardeners in 2022. Interests include soils, succulents, vegetables and perennials, and garden design, studying for several years with the Landscape Architecture program at UC Berkeley. Kimberly helps friends, family and community members transform their outdoor spaces into gardens that work for them — she led an effort to turn an elementary school in Haight-Ashbury from a barren paved lot into a multi-level thriving garden for play and curriculum. Kimberly is specializing in soils and loves sharing her passion with the public.
