4-H Campers Thrive at YMCA Camp La Honda
This summer, more than sixty enthusiastic 4-H campers enjoyed a week-long overnight camp at YMCA Camp in La Honda, a picturesque oasis nestled in the rolling hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. From sunlit mornings to starlit evenings, the camp offered an enriching blend of outdoor adventure and personal growth that left a lasting impression on both campers, counselors, and chaperones alike.
Each day presented a new opportunity for adventure, with highlights including hiking, zip-lining across the forest canopy, and navigating the camp’s canoeing area. The many activities allowed campers to challenge themselves and build confidence in a supportive environment.
Campers also engaged in more focused skill-building activities such as archery, where they honed their precision and focus, and crafting sessions that allowed them to express their creativity.
Cabin assignments were thoughtfully designed to ensure that each child felt a sense of belonging and camaraderie within their group. The teen and college-aged counselors played a crucial role in creating this welcoming environment. Their dedication and enthusiasm were evident as they led activities, facilitated group discussions, and provided support throughout the week.
The sense of community was further strengthened during mealtimes. Campers bonded over how hungry they were and how everything tastes better at camp. In the evenings, the campfire became a central gathering place where campers and counselors alike enjoyed singing, storytelling, and skits. These nightly events were more than just entertainment—they were opportunities for building lasting friendships and cherished memories.
By the end of the week, it was clear that the campers and counselors had not only enjoyed many activities but had also grown as individuals. They returned home with new skills, a deeper appreciation for nature, and several new friends.
